iPhone Jailbreaking Pros and Cons

November 7th, 2008

Apple’s iPhone and iPhone 3G won’t work with SIM cards from unsupported carriers.  The iPhone was carried only by AT&T in the United States.  Here in the Philippines, it wasn’t released at all.  For the iPhone to be unlocked, you have to insert a supported SIM card and activate the phone through iTunes.  At the current state of the IT age, almost everything is possible.  With the help of a tool called Pwnage or QuickPwn, iPhone can be unlocked, jailbroken and activated for use with unsupported carriers.  Of course everything has its pros and cons.  Now what are the pros and cons of using a jailbroken software?  Let’s take a look.

First off, the pros.  With a jailbroken software, third party applications that aren’t approved by Apple can be installed through Cydia and Installer.app application manager.  These software are not found in the iTunes App Store and are not supported by apple.  Modification of the iPhone’s core files is also possible through SSH (Secured Shell) by installing OpenSSH through Cydia.

Disabling the annoying auto-correct feature can also be turned off on jailbroken software.  The possibilities are almost endless but of course it has its drawback.  That’s about the pros.  To summarize, with a jailbroken software applications from third-party developers can be installed and the iPhone can be used with unsupported carriers.  Also take note that only the iPhone can be unlocked as of now as the hackers are still looking for ways to unlock the baseband processor of the iPhone 3G.  The iPhone 3G can only be jailbroken to allow installation of unsupported applications.

Now the consequences of jailbreaking.  Based on my own experience, it slows down boot up for both iPhone and iPhone 3G.  Sometimes it also cause the device to reboot by itself or render applications unusable until next restart.  Jailbreaking also prevents you from updating your software through iTunes when there’s a new release.  Yes, you can update but you have to wait for the hackers to release an updated tool to jailbreak that new software version.  And the most important of all, it voids the warranty of your phone.

So for me, it’s better to keep your software legit so you can have support from Apple or your carrier and update your software legitimately through iTunes when there’s a new release.  But then again, it’s your preference if you want your iPhone jailbroken or not.

@Jehzlau - You can try and then revert back to the original software. It won’t hurt your iPhone :D

The big problem here is that iPhone 2G were not officially released here in the Philippines, so technically you can not really use it without jailbreaking it.

Back to nokia na lang! hahaha
